Product Review: Nature Balance Wellness - nbw.ca

Nature Balance Wellness sent me a 3 piece Yarrow and Rosemary facial for oily skin, consisting of Yarrow and Rosemary Deep Foaming Cleanser, Yarrow and Rosemary Clarifying Toner and the Yarrow and Rosemary Light Daily Moisturizer as well as an assortment of other products. However, I thought I would review this facial collection separately from the other products.

I began by reading the list of ingredients, as per usual. Containing 68% organic ingredients, I was happily surprised that the first ingredient listed on the Yarrow & Rosemary Deep Foaming Cleanser was Rosemary Tea brewed with Purified water. An infusion is an excellent way to collect all of the oils from the herb. Imagine how giddy I became, giggling as I showered, knowing full well I was washing my face with a blend of Rosemary Tea and Vegetable glycerin and other fine ingredients. Something about that sheer fact alone had my inner child quite excited.

The Yarrow & Rosemary Clarifying Toner contains 20% Organic Ingredients and the very first ingredient is Witch hazel Distilate! Witch Hazel is absolutely wonderful for the skin! The second ingredient is Rosemary Floral water. Now for those of you who are unaware, Rosemary Floral water (Rosemary in general) is said to be wonderful for for acne or oily skin.

All of the products worked wonderfully except I found the Yarrow & Rosemary Light Moisturizer to still be a touch to heavy for my skin. I live in a very humid, coastal region of Canada so it still doesn't quite put my skin in balance. I had much more success keeping the oily shine down on my face using only the Cleanser and the Toner.

With the holidays fast approaching, the facial products from Nature Balance Wellness make a wonderful gift idea.

Round the Clock Hubby

Poor hubby....

He slept for only a half an hour last night... he was on the water all day today. He got home around supper time but he was unable to settle in until almost 7 pm. He was overtired so naturally sleep didn't come easy for him and it was very broken. He was up again by 11 pm this evening to be back to the wharf for midnight. I've missed his presence dearly and I worry about him so much out there.

I hugged him just before he got out of bed and it just felt so nice to breathe him in for a moment. I changed the sheets this morning so they were fresh and their was something very comforting about his smell and the smell of the sheets combined that reminded me of my childhood in a very pleasant. I wish I could bottle that smell and keep it.  It is funny how the memory works and funny how much stronger the hold a persons smell has on you when you miss them.

The nature of a lobster fisherman's job is very labor intensive and strenuous. It is a common feat for some of the older fishermen to suffer strokes, heart attacks or other injuries the first few days. Many of them are out of shape when the season begins and that much strain and weathering is hard on the body. Fortunately hubby was working on the garage a lot this summer and also cut and piled the remainder of the wood that had been out drying all season recently so his body was already broken in for season. He is still terribly sore though. You can't help that, regardless of how careful you are not to bang your body around.

Safe travels.

Review: Andrea Professionals Hair Removal Line

To test the various Andrea Professional Waxing Products us girls had a waxing party.

Waxing Party: Small gathering of friends with the common goal of ripping the hair out of their follicles. Drinks recommended.

Since body hair can often a source of embarrassment for some ladies you most likely won't extend open invitations to everyone you know. Wine is recommended and snacks, perhaps even music or a television show that everyone enjoys but no one has to dedicate time to watch. For the sake of our dignity, there were no pictures taken of this event. Did I mention wine?

There were supposed to be 4 of us in attendance but at the last minute one of the girls was unable to attend, so we were down to 3 of us. Only 2 of us 3 had hair long enough to meet the required waxing length.

We tried all of the waxing products in this session and left the hair removal creams for another time. Since none of us are waxing professionals and have had very little experience with at home waxing kits this event took much more time and effort than it would have taken someone who was skilled in the art of hair yanking.

First we tried out the Body Waxing Strips, they worked but I found it left behind a lot of hairs. I don't find it came with enough strips to wax more than one leg.

The Facial Waxing Strips work well but I must say it perplexed me that the wax was on plastic strips instead of fabric or paper-like strips like their other products. I was pleased that I didn't have as much of a breakout as I normally encounter with other waxing products. It would be nice to have larger strips, I found that there wasn't enough variety in strip size and width.

Next we tried the Water Soluble Cold Wax. The ingredients on this product caught my eye.  Unlike all of the other Andrea Professional Products, this was the only one with ingredients that I actually stood behind (with the exception of the SloGrow Lotion which I didn't use at all because I choose not to use paraben's in my cosmetics...) I could actually pronounce every single ingredient on the box! It worked beautifully, in fact, it put the Body strips to shame. My only complaint is that is doesn't come packaged with enough strips.

The Brazilian wax, hurts... the most out of all the strips and wax. It most likely isn't the fault of the wax though. It is designed to wax a very sensitive area. So it is natural to experience more pain in an area where their is increased sensitivity. it took most of the jar before I finally got the hang of how to rip off the wax in one swipe. There really is a technique to it. Regardless of how effective the Brazilian wax actually is... I can truly say that it is worth it to pay to have a professional wax your entire bikini area and your underarms. Especially if you don't know how to properly lift and pull this wax. It is messy and because of the constant trips to the microwave to heat the wax, it is impractical to do in my home where we often have high traffic. Having said all of that, once you get the hang of it, the wax works beautifully. It was the favorite of my friend, while the Cold Wax was my personal favorite. I have rapid hair growth and it was a good 3-4 weeks before my hair really started growing back, aside from tiny fine hairs that I broke off due to my inexperience.

Review: Pure-Incense.com

I received a small package containing various incense sticks to sample and review from Pure-Incense. The incense is crafted according to the ways of the ancients instead of the modern commercial world and was originally intended for temple deity worship. It wasn't even discovered by the Western world until the 1960's.

The Absolute Sandalwood smelled earthy and sweet. It burns very pure and it did not aggravate my delicate sinuses like cheap store bought commercial incense. A very comforting and calming scent, sandalwood promotes well being and has a 4000 year history as a meditative aide. While burning a stick of Frankincense our neighbor Darby came over, having previously spent a few months in India he found it quite strange that particular stick of incense smelled "so much like India". It was as though he walked into another country.

Upon first smelling the Absolute Agarwood, I was taken back to my childhood. It reminded me of the more masculine scents in the bathroom at my grandparents house growing up. I pondered if my grandfather used a product that contained Agarwood (Oud) oil. It is a very woodsy scent with a hint of spiciness. The Agarwood burns a little thicker than the Sandalwood but I adapted to it very quickly. It a very therapeutic and relaxing scent which serves to reason considering Agarwood has been used in ritual meditations for many generations. The more I inhale the aroma, the deeper the relaxation. Did you know that Agarwood is produced from a diseased Asian fur tree fighting a fungal infection?

Night Queen smells nothing like the first two sticks. It is Jasmine dominant with a note of another scent that I cannot put my finger on. It is pungently aromatic and I do understand the correlation between the jungle reference in the product description. Something in its aroma reminds me of growth and dense foliage. Hari Leela reminded my husband of an old friends home. It has a very stimulating and woody smell.  I really enjoyed both the quality of this incense so much I placed an order for bundle of assorted scents!

Dumping Day, District 34

Today marks the beginning of dumping day for district 34. For those unaware, dumping day is the very first day of the lobster fishing season. I live in a small fishing community that very much depends on the lobster industry for survival. It is such a big deal around here that they even give children the day off of school so they can optionally go down with their families to the wharf and see the fishermen off in the wee hours before daylight. The boats are not allowed to leave until 6 in the morning. The entire thing is broadcast our local radio station CJLS.

I grew up a fisherman's daughter and I don't think I was ever down to the wharf as a child to see my father off on dumping day. I have lots of memories of the wharf mind you... but just not that early in the morning. Maybe mom let us sleep...

Growing up, I didn't realize it was such a big deal. I mean... it was everyday life. It was what my father did for a living. I was too busy dreaming, learning and playing to notice.

In fact, as the wife of a fisherman, I only came to understand how big of an event it was last year. Terrible isn't it. Over a third of my life goes by before I gain insight to this event. It is amazing what awareness does to a person...

Last year, I listened to the radio for my very first dumping day broadcast. I remember feeling very overwhelmed with guilt for the first few hours of the day as though I was silently grieving all of the years of support gone by that I hadn't consciously contributed to... you see it isn't always about being present physically. Sometimes it is simply a matter of your thoughts being there, wishing them well.... keeping them safe for another season.

Winners and a New Song

Well it looks as though I have my work cut out for me... I would be fibbing if I said that my tiny little creative hiatus didn't have me feeling slightly overwhelmed. But in a good way... I feel there are a lot of great endeavors of all sorts up ahead and I am excited to approach them all. No worries though. I plan on handling it as gracefully as possible.

We have quite the list of winners to announce. To make this a little easier on me I'm going to tackle this list in 2 separate posts.

1) The winner of the Free Product coupon for a Full sized bottle of Ginger Syrup is #53 - Annie

2) The winner of the Container of Cavena Nuda is #74 - Annie

3) We have 3 winners of some Fruit Spreads from Crofters Organic!
  • Winner of 3 jars is #205 - 409Scope
  • Winner of 2 jars is #100 - Sarah
  • Winner of 1 jar is #98 - Sandyandcosmo
4) The winner of the package of Hemp Hearts from Manitoba Harvest is #14 Jennifer Haile

None of the winners have been confirmed as of yet!

There are a bunch of reviews and more giveaways coming up here very soon so stay tuned! I also have more winners to announce!

If you do not follow on facebook you probably didn't see the video I shared with everyone. It is the song I wrote about earlier this week that was preoccupying my mind. I slapped together a video so I could share it with everyone.

Songwriting Fiasco

I have a whole bunch of winners to announce later on today but first I just wanted to let everyone know that I have had a MAJOR songwriting wave this week and my sons birthday party, so this week has been a little hectic. This is why I haven't exactly been active on the blog despite the fact that I do have a number of reviews that need to be posted, as well as a few giveaways and I know you lovely people are patiently waiting the results from the last few giveaways. The thing about songwriting is that you kind of have to write while the inspiration is there and grief from a dear old friends death have brought about some sort of creative transmutation when it comes to how I'm coping with said events. I'm hoping to use my feelings productive in a manner that can inspire others too...

Anyway, I will have videos to post in the next couple days to show you all what I have been up to over here. At least one... with another shortly to follow. Yea, editing videos to it as well... so is the hubby in the basement. We're pretty cute right now.

Love and blessings to each and every one of you!

Product Review: Organic India - Certified Organic Teas

Earlier this week, I reviewed some Herbal supplements from a lovely company called Organic India that started off in the 1990's as a small company and now have various offices located around the world.

"Real silence is when you have a silent mind, even when you are speaking."
~ Papaji, Sri H.W.L. Poonja ~

Today, I am going to talk about a couple of the teas that Organic India sent me to review. All of Organic India's tea's contain Tulsi or "Holy Basil". As posted on the Organic India, the health benefits of Tulsi are many.

"Modern scientific research offers impressive evidence that Tulsi reduces stress, enhances stamina, relieves inflammation, lowers cholesterol, eliminates toxins, protects against radiation, prevents gastric ulcers, lowers fevers, improves digestion and provides a rich supply of antioxidants and other nutrients. Tulsi is especially effective in supporting the heart, blood vessels, liver and lungs and also regulates blood pressure and blood sugar." Dr. Ralph Miller, former Director of Research for the Canadian Dept. of Health and Welfare.

This 18ct box of Certified Organic Tulsi Sweet Rose Tea is infused with the following herbs:

Organic Tulsi Blend (Leaf & Flower), Organic Chamomile (Flower), Organic Rose (Petal), Organic Lemon Myrtle (leaf), Organic Stevia (Leaf)

Upon first opening the individual package the sweet aroma of rose petals immediately entrances you. The infused aroma is sweet, sensual and earthy. The result is a calming cup of relaxation, why not clear your mind for a while.

I also received a 100g tin of  Certified Organic Tulsi Orginal loose tea which is the Proprietary standard blend of Krishna Tulsi, Vana Tulsi and Rama Tulsi.

I really enjoy this tea a great deal and I can see it quickly becoming a part of my daily regimen. It is earthy and I feel very comfortable while drinking it. I started adding it to food in small amounts as well. In fact, I made myself a Greek salad the other day and in place of the fresh home grown Oregano that I usually sprinkle on top of my salad, I sprinkled Holy Basil instead. It was delicious. I would recommend the same for pasta and even pizza crust.

I really encourage you to explore the entire product line at Organic India, you might find exactly what you need.

Product Review: Organic India - Herbal Supplements

Organic India is a company that develops Ayurvedic herbal formulations for the health and well being of the people. It began as a small business during the 1990's when thousands of people from all over the world came to India in search of truth and realization, inspired by the simple truths of Papaji:

"Keep Quiet.
The Eternal Truth exists within you.
Do not entertain a single thought and the Truth will reveal itself to itself
."

The Turmeric Formula contains:

370mg - Organic Turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa)
  80mg - Turmeric Extract - 95% curcumimoids

50mg - Organix Ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale)

Formulated for Healthy Inflammation Response, Organic India's Turmeric Formula has been created with the healing attributes of Turmeric. Turmeric has known blood purification attributes and aids the lymph system in cleansing the body thus improving inflammation and immune response.  Any Precautions when taking Turmeric? If you have any upcoming surgeries or are taking anti-coagulation drugs like Warfarin it is not advisable to take Turmeric as it will increase both the strength of the drug and the risk of bleeding after surgery.  In fact, it is recommended to discontinue use of Turmeric by mouth 2 weeks prior to having surgery to insure proper coagulation.

The Tusli - Holy Basil contains:

133mg - Organic Krishna Tulsi leaf (Ocimum sanctum)
133mg - Organic Rama Tulsi leaf (Ocimum sanctum)

133mg - Organic Vana Tulsi leaf (Ocimum gratissimum)

In India, Holy Basil is revered as "The Queen of the Herbs". Holy Basil (aka: "Tulsi") is a stress fighting adaptogen that builds energy and stamina. We all understand the link between stress and the immune system. This makes Holy Basil a wonderful immune system supporter. Additionally it helps support the body's natural detoxification process and helps supports mood stability, all of the wondrous things that come with stress reduction.

I received both of these compounds to review as well as some teas which I will review seperately.  I am very impressed with both of these compounds. The herbal supplements have been finely ground and precisely measured. I can almost visualize the mortar and pestle and the care put into each ingredient right now to the finest of details. The herbs are contained within vegetable cellulose capsules. Despite being contained, you can still taste the herbs through the capsule so it a good idea to have a glass of water on hand to immediately wash them down. I didn't have a problem ingesting these formulated capsules although a friend of mine with a sensitive belly found them to be a little heavy on her system without food in the belly.

Organic Alert! Product Review: Surf Sweets - Snack Packs

Have you ever heard of Surf Sweets? They are a company from the United States that make candy that is made with organic fruit juice, no artificial colors or flavors, free of corn syrup and GMO's. The product is made with 90 percent organic material. They produce their candy in a nut-free facility. The product is allergy free, casein free, dairy free and gluten free. The outside packaging of the box is made from 100 percent recycled paper and printed with environmentally friendly vegetable-based inks.

I was sent a box of Sour Berry Bears and a box of Gummy Bears to review.

I placed a package in the lunchbox of my youngest son. He loves healthy foods and will often opt for healthy snacks. He was thrilled to know that these were made with healthy ingredients. He returned home from school and the first thing he did after he threw down his book bag was tell me that he really enjoyed the snacks. He said, "They were yummy and healthy and didn't make me grow wider." I giggled at the last part of his sentence. I imagined him believing that the results were instantaneous. How cute.

The Sour Berry Bears weren't very sour. Although, having said this I'm sure that there aren't many alternatives at this time for healthy ingredients that will geniunely make a candy taste sour without a chemical overload. I will say though that even though the consistency of the Sour Berry Bears were not my favorite, they still tasted delicious. I find that the outer sour sugar-like coating made the overall consistency of the candy seem a little too much like gelatin.

The Gummy Bears were incredible. The flavour was pungently fruity and the consistency was chewing as a gummy should be. I could have eaten a whole box right then. Good thing I have will power... sometimes.

Overall these gummies are delicious and it is lovely to see a candy company take a healthy approach.  Thank you Surf Sweets!

Have you heard of Headline Shirts? They are a T-shirt company based in San Francisco with a wide assortment of interesting t-shirts. They sent me a shirt to review and I chose the Da vinci Rock Man. Their sizes run normal and they have a sizing chart available on their site. When the shirt arrived I thought it might be a little small. It looked small. But I tried it on and it fit me perfectly. The fabric is nice and the shirts are well crafted. I wore it the very first day of the NS Music Week conference when I attended the Metal Show at Dooly's. This is the graphic that was on that shirt.

Headline Shirts has offered a free T-shirt of choice to one of my readers with free shipping

Nova Scotia Music Week 2011 #NSMW

This weekend was Nova Scotia Music Week and because I still live in 1997 and have no cell phone (for now...) I had no real method aside from Twitter to communicate with you lovely readers! On the odd occasion when we managed to stop home for a quick moment in between hotels, shows and mingling I would post a random tweet to keep you folks slightly informed. Otherwise those quick moments we're mostly spend sleeping for a couple seemingly short hours after which we would quickly return to the hotel. We learned a lot, asked a lot of questions and met a lot of new faces. Laughter and songs filled the hotel rooms and hallways as we encountered familiar faces and new faces.

Our "out of this house" bands, Dress Code Casual and The Astral District both got to play on the Zygote stage, a new stage that Music Week offered this year for new bands that are just starting out in the industry. It was beautiful for Mat and I to be able to participate in such a wonderful conference.

Mat got to sing at the Gala! The singer for Rain Over Saint Ambrose and friend Cory Leblanc unfortunately ended developing a case of laryngitis after a completely amazing performance Saturday night. Their bass player Marc Durkee, who also plays with Dress Code sang the leads and Mat joined him on the chorus. It was really amazing to see him up there. I'm so proud of him.

The lovely Carmen Townsend won 4 awards. Three Sheet, a completely amazing hip-hop act won Bell Aliant Entertainer of the Year. We watched them on the late night stage Saturday evening and I couldn't stop dancing. Congrats to a fun group of guys The Stanfields for snagging the award for Music Video of the Year for their video Ship to Shore. You can check out the complete list of winners here. Congrats to each and every one of them and to the nominees as well!
