Music Monday - Big Game Hunt

If your into Stoner Rock (Kyuss, Clutch...) you will love Big Game Hunt, if you're not into Stoner Rock... you'll probably still love Big Game Hunt because they are that awesome!

I've seen these guys live on various occasions and have even been privileged enough to play a show with them before the Attic closed in Halifax. These guys are one of my favorite acts to see live. I honestly can't say that I have ever come home feeling let down after seeing these guys play! Mind you I have come home from every show with a sore neck, which to me serves as proof of rather enjoyable evening.

A couple weeks ago these boys came home and had a show to celebrate the release of their second album "Goliath", I was pretty bummed out that I couldn't attend. I wasn't feeling well and I was on heavy doses of pain killers, so a trip out of the house was not in my immediate future. Next time though, I will be there!

Big Game Hunt is:

Wayne Muise - Guitar
Jordan Rose - Vocals
Jared McInnis - Bass
Matt Duncanson - Drums

They have a couple shows lined up in the near future... attend if you can!

6 Sep 2009 19:00
Main Stage (Marina/ Wharf) at Wharf Rat Rally Digby, NS
13 Nov 2009 22:00
The Seahorse Halifax, NS

Here is an older video of a song off their new Album Goliath called "Leaving."

This song is called "Wisdom in One", it's also off their album Goliath!

Goose Herding 101

My neighbor has a flock of geese.

This may sound strange to you if your not familiar with country living. They are loud, but overall amusing to watch. Believe it or not I'm actually really enjoying hearing their squawks in the background. This morning was a little out of the ordinary though... when I say out of the ordinary I am referring to the solitary goose wandering up and down the road barking at the odd car that drove by and startled it.

Afraid that the children would go outside to play later and find Goose guts on the side of the road, I armed myself with my video camera (Those of you who have ever had the privilege of viewing "Crazy Ass Goose" on You Tube will understand why I brought my video camera with me) and wandered off to see what I could do to get this renegade goose back home.

I stayed with the goose for quite sometime, close to it, but not close enough to startle it. The last thing I wanted to do was provoke a goose attack. They can get pretty mean quickly. Where the goose went, I followed. Eventually the goose became used to my presence and I was able to get close enough to it to "herd" it back home.

As we walked up the driveway, I walked towards the house to tell our neighbor Dan that his goose had escaped and to let him know that he was home safe and sound and the Goose Squawked at me!! I don't think he wanted to get in trouble. So I walked back over towards the Goose and he showed me how he escaped. He tried to squeeze his body through the fence unsuccessfully. He then walked over towards another section of the fence and squeezed his way through without any effort. Dan was not home so I will have to wait until later to let him know about his goose.

On the way home, I stopped by the fence to watch the geese and they were all around the pond wading. The goose that I brought home was working his way down the hill towards his family. He kind of reminded me of Uncle Traveling Matt from Fraggle Rock. The adventurer who had been to the other side of the fence and caught a glimpse of the dangers of the outside world. All of the geese started squawking amongst themselves with a touch of excitement when they noticed that their friend had returned. I'm sure my goose friend will have many tall tales to share with them.

Hopefully, I won't wake up tomorrow with the entire flock in my yard...

Music Monday - Dress Code Casual

Maybe I'm a bit biased when it comes to this band in particular because my hubby was the songwriter and front man for this band. On the same note, I'm also a musician and I do have a pretty decent ear.

We lived in Halifax for a couple years. We originally moved up because my hubby (Mat Bridgeo) was in a band called Phlegethon and they were packing shows around here and wanted to play for a larger demographic. Band politics eventually broke up the 6 piece funk band. After a short period of time Mat got back into writing and teamed up with two other members of Phlegethon (Craig Harris on Bass, Bill Bullerwell on Drums) and formed Dress Code Casual. They ended up recording a very professional 6 song album in the basement but prior to being released the best song on the whole album mysterious vanished off the Roland. This upset the boys so much (because of all the work put into it and how amazing it sounded) that they refused to release the album! Mind you a small amount of digital copies have been circulated locally...

We eventually moved back to Yarmouth due to personal reasons and both Mat and I have been primarily focused on the family life and songwriting in general. I encourage you all to check out their myspace though. The music should definitely be heard.

Music Monday - Knives VS Nerves

I wanted to do a little feature a band called Knives Vs Nerves, who are not only a group of very talented musicians but great friends!

Knives VS Nerves Roll Call:

New Trev (Trevor Jacquard) on Guitar/Vocals
Jeremy Wheeler on Guitar/Vocals
Mark Durkee on Drums/Vocals,
Meg Hen on Bass

The four of them hail from my hometown Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and have quite the following around here. I watched them play at the waterfront a few weeks back and they seriously killed their set, it was awesome!! Unfortunately there are no full videos from that show... so I'm going to put up a video from a set a while back at the Y'ARC.

They have a show coming up during Nova Scotia Music Week (which is being held in Yarmouth this year) and are also recording an album this fall! If you like them, you can find them on facebook and myspace. Give these guys some love :-)

"Swollen Kidneys" VS "Waking up in a tub of Ice"

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last couple days. I ended up in the Emergency Room a couple nights ago with what the Nurse and Doctor repeatedly referred to as a "Massive" Kidney Infection. I spent a good part of yesterday just laying down and resting because it hurt too much to sit in the computer chair. I tried... and I cried. I have a really high pain tolerance but it was too much. Yesterday (while waiting for the pills to circulate through my body) my kidney was so swollen on the left side that you could visibly see it. It was not fun... but the pills are slowly starting to work now and I seem to feel pretty good in the morning and the afternoon.

I've had such a hard time laying down and staying put though, my body and mind are restless. I kept getting up to go do things and I would get started on a task and then my kidney would throb again. OH YEA, I'm sick I need to go lay down. I'm just used to having something on the go all the time. My mind is either busy or blank, I'm not used to the in between.

So because of this infection, I have had night sweats... it happens to the best of us I guess. But it's gross, last night I could smell the sulfur from the pills seeping out of my pores. Sounds attractive doesn't it. Hubby slept the farthest he has EVER slept from me. I can't say I blame him... who wants to cuddle stinky sweaty sulfur woman anyway! EW! I didn't even want to sleep with myself, but it isn't like I had a choice in that matter.

In the worst of the pain, I remember wondering if there really was a difference between feeling all the pain that I felt from an intensely swollen kidney or waking up in a tub of ice without your kidneys. Although I don't know for certain, I feel as though they would be pretty similar... minus the shock and the rest of your body shutting down. Which if left unattended could happen to the swollen kidney anyway.

Anyway, I'm off to drop a few cards and go lay down again for a bit.
Cheers :-)

The Creative Process??

I've been sitting here for the last 10 minutes trying to wrap my head around the creative process.

It's so different for everyone too depending on who they are as a person. As with life people can be very passive or aggressive with their arts. I've seen people go into almost a trance like state when the are creating, almost like they aren't even here! Almost like meditation in a sense.

For me, it's just something I do... sometimes it's as though a light-bulb went off in my brain. Sometimes it doesn't even go off, I just become... aware of it. It isn't consistent either. I do not have access to a creative stencil, or magical formula to make things happen... I mean, creation just IS.

With songwriting, sometimes the music comes out first and I build around that. Perhaps a melody... Maybe, I might have two lines of lyrics stuck in my head which can inspire a whole other world of ideas. Let us not forget about the other creative things like still design, film, crafting, drawing, animation... Look at that surface! Scratch free.

So, I decided to Google "the creative thinking process". Google answered.

The 5 steps to the Creative Thinking Process are as follows:

1. Goal
2. Creative Thinking
3. Prioritization
4. Plan/Take Action
5. Evaluation

:-/

OKAY

Yes...

That is a very logical response...

That's also assuming I decided to write a song, in most cases the song decided to write itself. Or I started doodling and the drawing just happened. Or I end up going overboard editing something I was just messing around with and coming up with this random unexpected blessed gem!

But there are other very important things that aren't being considered. Have you every watched people create? There is passion, pride, ego, heart, psychology. All of these things make creation complicated and moody... and beautiful.

My brain hurts now, I think I have blogged enough for today. So goodnight to you :-)

Dead Pet Stories - Episode 1

Friends of mine put this together earlier this year. I find them pretty funny, so I thought I would share :-)

I'll post more episodes as the weeks pass!

Attention Span Tuesday - Episode 1

A few of you know that I took Film making at the Center For Arts and Technology in Halifax. It was a 15 month course and I learned a lot and met some wonderful people. The pride and joy project we all worked on took place in our 4th quarter. We made a 10 episode sketch comedy show called Attention Span and aired it on You Tube. My roll on the show was Editor/Music. I wrote the main theme song and co-wrote a few jingles with a genius writer who goes by the name of Matt Chisholm.

Working on the show was intense. We had to put a new episode up every week. So everything was shot and I would pretty much pull all-night editing sessions for 3 days straight prior to the deadline... I had no life lol. The people in my life suffered as I was spending so much time at the school.. but I think in the end we ended up with something great, of which we could be proud!

It's been close to two years since the first episode aired and I thought I would play one a week as a tribute to people and passion! Well... that is part of it. Last September one of our teachers/mentors/amazing friends who was a couple years younger than myself I might add... passed away from cancer very quickly. He found out just after we graduated and a few short months later he was gone. He was an amazing Editor/Producer/Person and he is dearly missed.

His name was Daniel Gaynor, he appears in some of these skits and I would love for his memory and everything he taught us to live on.

*gets her kleenex*

OKAY, back to the show. In this episode we introduce many segments that will commonly appear throughout the season. Each episode contains a special "One-Off" that shapes the show. Enjoy!

WARNING:

(1) If kids are around don't watch it... there is a lot of language in 1 recurrent segment in particular.
(2) The views in this show are not the views of the people who made the show. It was all in good fun!
